(Disclaimer: I won't feed you the summary here, go watch the frikkin movie and help the movie industry! On that note, enjoy!)
I have read the screenplay of "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" a looong time ago and wondered immensely why it hasn't been picked up by a studio yet. Now it may have been a great decision to shelve it for a while and wait for this exact moment. Because right now, Judy Anne Santos has matured, couple that with her genuine chemistry with her boyfriend, Ryan Agoncillo and an absolutely adorable supporting cast with a good soundtrack to boot and hell yeah, to show it NOW is a great decision.
Not to belittle director and writer Joey Reyes, but to be blunt, the story of "Kasal..." is ordinary. There's really nothing new about it. There's no new concept here, no new visual effects. It's so ordinary that it's easy to get lost in the story and find yourself in the situation that the characters are in. It's so ordinary, it's actually a reflection of couples all over the world. It's the universal truth of coupling, uncoupling and the intricacies of relationships that make this story work.
While the story is ordinary, the film is superb. The narration is crisp, the flow is unhampered (save for the fact that you know the chronology, so you know it's going to be long at times), the characters have a life all their own and the dialogue is just hilarious! The ordinary story is presented in such a way that you journey with the characters and live their married life, too!
I am not a fan of Judy Anne Santos' but I think she is a good actress and I am glad she played the part of Angie. A lesser actress would have been disastrous. (Thank God, and Joey Reyes, that Kris Aquino wasn't cast!!!) In this movie, Judy Anne became Angie, one of the better-written characters in Philippine TV and movie history! I am so glad that we are finally getting empowered women portrayed in movies. Angie is strong, strong-willed, she's got her own ideals and she's got balls, man! I've never been so happy to see her kick Ryan Agoncillo's character repeatedly--albeit in the shin. It's a delightful experience.
Now, Ryan, I'm surprised is actually effortless. Short of probably playing himself, he's as natural as they go. And of course, my other favorite character is Gina Pareno's Pilita. She is not just an excuse for comic relief, she is the epitome of the ultimate "Wag-mo-ko-apihin-porke-mahirap-ako-mas-magaling-yata-ako-sa-yo!" Pinoy. Admit it, we all have that complex. When we get insecure we first wallow in self-pity then a second later, we bounce back. Or is it just me?
Ha-ha! Long story short, "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" is money well-spent. I haven't seen any of the other Metro Manila Filmfest entries but I'm sure I wasn't shortchanged when I decided to see this. People were laughing and clapping all throughout the movie, isn't that proof enough?
